Fear of Flying? Why We Don’t Prescribe Sedatives for Air Travel

Many people experience anxiety about flying. While it might seem like a simple solution to take a sedative, such as diazepam, to help with this fear, it is important to understand the potential risks and why our practice does not prescribe these medications for this purpose.

Why We Don't Prescribe Diazepam for Flying

  • Safety Concerns

Diazepam is not licensed as a sedative for use on aircraft. It is a sedative that typically makes patients sleepy and relaxed, which might sound ideal for a nervous flyer. However, in the event of an emergency, being sedated can significantly impair your ability to concentrate, follow instructions, and react promptly. This could have serious safety implications for both the individual and those around them.

  • Increased Risk of Blood Clots

Sedative drugs induce an unnatural non-REM sleep, meaning the person is less likely to move around. This reduced movement can increase the risk of developing deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a serious and sometimes life-threatening condition where a blood clot forms in a deep vein, often in the leg. Long flights further heighten this risk.

  • Unpredictable Reactions

While many find benzodiazepines like diazepam sedating, some may experience paradoxical effects such as agitation and aggression. Additionally, these drugs can cause disinhibition, leading to behaviors that the individual would not normally exhibit. This is especially concerning in the confined space of an aircraft and can pose risks to other passengers and potentially lead to legal issues, particularly if alcohol is also consumed

  • Alternative Solutions

For all these reasons, we advise patients with a fear of flying to consider non-medication-based solutions. Many airlines offer Fear of Flying courses designed to help you manage and overcome your anxiety. These courses are specifically tailored to address and alleviate the fear associated with flying, providing long-term coping strategies without the risks associated with sedative medications

Your safety and well-being are our top priorities.

While the idea of taking a sedative to ease the stress of flying might seem appealing, the potential risks far outweigh the benefits. We encourage you to explore alternative methods to manage your fear of flying and to speak with us about any concerns you may have.
